What attracts termites? If you don’t know the answer to this question, then preventing termites from infesting your property would be virtually impossible.
Usually, homeowners go the extra mile to finish seasonal projects around the home to protect their house from pests. However, some of these jobs may actually do more than good, especially when it comes to termites.
Read on and determine whether you’re attracting termites to your property or not.
Firewood and Woodpiles
For easy access, most homeowners stack firewood on the stoop or against their home. This, however, can attract termites toward the home and give them an entry point. At Bob Gunn Termite Solutions, we recommend keeping woodpiles and firewood at least 20 feet away from the home and, if possible, keep wood elevated at least five inches from the ground.
Not everyone knows that cleaning the gutters is an essential part of termite prevention also. Termites are attracted to moisture. Water pooling brought about by clogged gutters can result in insulation being vulnerable to termites. You can prevent water from pooling by using downspout extenders and splash blocks to divert rainwater away from the foundation.
Ensure you don’t leave stumps and dead trees in your yard as any rotting wood material can serve as termite fuel and eventually result in termites making their way to your home.
Mulch is a garden staple and frequently utilised near the home and against the foundation. However, it can be a food source for termites and also retains moisture, attracting these destructive pests. What you can do is to minimise the use of wood mulch and keep it at least 15 inches away from the foundation. It also paramount to monitor existing mulch for any termite signs, especially beneath the surface.
Two other potential pathways for termites seeking a new nesting location are leaves and tree limbs that come in contact with the roof and home exterior. Tree limbs that get in the way of sunlight can also slow the evaporation of precipitation, enabling moisture to build-up.
