By this time, you’ve probably finished listing all your resolutions for this brand new year. However, before implementing the changes you want to make to better yourself and your home, check to see if pest-proofing is on your list.
We know pest-proofing might not be the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to New Year’s Resolutions, but believe us when we say that, if done properly, it can save you a lot of money, time and frustration during the year.
Protect your home from unwanted guests and avoid damage or infestations all year round by following these five tips from Bob Gunn Termite Solutions:
1. Stow Holiday Decor Properly
Pack holiday decorations with care. To keep pests from infesting them whilst stored, place them in durable plastic containers with secure lids.
2. Maintain Cleanliness in the Kitchen
Since food attracts pests to home, it’s paramount to clean the kitchen after every meal, throw away garbage on a regular and keep food in airtight containers. It also helps to avoid storing food items in the back of the pantry for too long.
3. Seal Cracks and Crevices
Sealing the gap between the door and floor by installing door sweeps (especially on exterior doors) will remove the space for bugs and rodents to enter your home. Sealing cracks and crevices on the outside of the home is also essential. This includes areas where pipes and utilities enter.
4. Store Firewood in the Proper Place
A number of pests deem woodpiles as their favourite hangout. Avoid any pests from hitching a ride indoors by storing firewood at least 20 feet away from your home and brushing it off before bringing it in.
5. Mind the Outdoors
Pest-proofing your home’s exterior in the winter months is just as important as doing so in any other season. Remove dead branches, bushes or old, fallen leaves from the yard if there are any. Don’t forget to clean out leaves and other gutter debris as well as repair loose shingles to avoid stagnant water as this could result in ice dams.
